Secure Sockets Layer Technology Digital Encryption Certificates
Normally, any text sent from your browser to the web server (in a form for example) is sent as plain text. This means that a hacker could potentially intercept the information sent from your browser and read it. If you are collecting any confidential information through your forms (payment or login information), it's a good idea to use a secure server for pages with these forms. By "use a secure server", we mean one which has secure socket layer (SSL) technology in place.
SSL (secure sockets layer) technology is used to achieve 2 purposes:
-
assure the user that he/she is communicating with the expected website
-
encrypt the data to prevent tampering and interception during
transmission from the user's program (typically a browser or email reader) to the server
For browsing, the website pages are then called up securely by using https:// instead of
http:// If working correctly, the lock icon will show in the corner of the browser when your visitor views the page.
Your host may give you a choice of how your secure server directory is configured. The standard way (included at no charge in all
of our regular accounts excluding BizCard) is to have your /secure/ folder linked as a subdirectory under
your host's server-wide certificate's domain. The https:// URL's you use would then include
your host's domain name in them, something like
https://secure.myhost.com/mysite/orderform.htm
In our case, they use our send-it-secure.com domain
name:
https://send-it-secure.com/mysite/orderform.htm
The second way is to have your /secure/ folder under your own domain. The https:// URL's you use would then be identical to your regular URL's except for the
https part - nice and short, less confusing to your users, and more
professional-looking, such as
https://mysite.com/order.htm
This can be done no matter whether your site is one of many on a
server (virtual hosting) or is the only site on a dedicated server. It can also
be done on both Windows or Unix flavor servers. There is a fee for this type of configuration,
depending on your choice. On our servers, this type of configuration also allows you to connect to your incoming mail (POP) server via a secure port when using webmail or an external email program such as Outlook or Eudora. This means that your email login and incoming messages are encrypted during transmission when using your email reading program.
All GeoTrust certificates offer 40/128-bit PKI-base encryption (the highest level commercially available). They carry the Equifax certificate root and are compatible with 99% of browsers. In addition, if you are hosting your website with us, your price includes SSL key generation, installation of the certificate on the server, and configuration of your secure folder.
(If you are hosted elsewhere, your own host must do this.) If your selection includes a seal, we will also install it for you and/or provide instruction on doing it yourself. The validity period for each is one year.
-
QuickSSL - automated verification! In most cases, the site is validated
and your certificate is granted in well under an hour.
-
QuickSSL Premium - the certificate is provisioned just as quickly, but this purchase includes code for a public Smart Seal which you place on your website as a visible assurance to your customers that their data is protected during transmission. The seal cannot be spoofed by others. It must be generated from within your own website pages in order to function, showing the current date and time. Clicking identifies the website for which the cert&seal were granted.
-
True Business ID - provisioning averages 2 business days. Includes code for a public TrueSite Smart Seal which you place on your website as a visible assurance to your customers that their data is protected during transmission. The seal cannot be spoofed by others. It must be generated from within your own website pages in order to function, and show the current date and time. In addition, applicants are authenticated as a business entity. The
TrueSite seal differs from the Premium seal in that it visibly confirms your identity right there on the seal without clicking. Clicking further identifies the website for which the cert&seal were granted as well as the confirmed associated location of the business entity. Your customers can rest assured that they are dealing with the party they think they are.
